This book is written to share the pleasure I've experienced for many years as an armchair treasure hunter and salvor. I've been fascinated throughout my life by the very words "shipwrecked treasure," and the mental visions which they formed: great Spanish galleons rolling across the Atlantic, heavily laden with the metallic riches wrested from the New World; rapacious pirates swarming aboard a hapless merchant vessel, plundering its rich cargo; a top heavy, overloaded galleon, in the grip of a howling hurricane, driven relentlessly toward a foaming reef while the terrified crew and passengers screamed their prayers for succor into the roaring wind. In this book, I've picked out for the reader a number of the most interesting shipwreck stories, stories which fascinated me and which I felt others might enjoy. They involve Spanish, Dutch, French, and English wrecks spanning a 250-year period from the mid-1th century to the early 19th century. Some were stately treasure galleons, some were lumbering East Indiamen, and others heavily armed warships. They all had one thing in common: a tragic end and a precious cargo which impelled latter day salvors to search incessantly for their remains. The drama of each shipwreck comes in two acts - the final voyage of the ship with the thrilling stories of hurricane, mutiny, murder, and heroism, and the subsequent discovery of the remains by relentless, single-minded treasure salvors.
