Poofin, the cloud, sent to the earth to learn responsibility, experiences many trials and errors, mostly errors, but finally accomplishes one thing that makes everyone happy

Poofin is a pleasantly-written fantasy about a cloud that cries on Christmas Eve and brings snow to a town that has not seen snow for years. Altos, ruler of clouds, sends lazy Poofin, a small white cloud, to Earth to learn how to become useful. Poofm's human contact is Bobby. Before finding a way to make people happy, Poofin creates much innocently-intended mischief with his magical tricks. He changes furniture and belongings in Bobby's room into strange, unmanageable shapes; he makes Christmas trees for sale shoot up to thirty-five feet-much too tall for any home. Worst of all, he mixes up the animals children are to ride in the Christmas procession: Camels lose their humps; pigs are covered with feathers; and Mr. Brown's cow wears a fluffy white wool coat. Everyone is very upset until Bobby makes Poofin put the animals back to their natural states. He explains to the cloud that this is not the way to make friends. Poofin is very sad at his rejection-so sad that he begins to cry. In the cold December air his tears crystallize into snowflakes that drift down on Peacedale and the creche where the children of the town are gathered to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Joyfully, they all watch as the white flakes fall on Christmas Eve. This imaginative story is colorfully illustrated by Jack Crompton. His centerfold and jacket illustration of Bobby's mom in all its disarray and the picture of animals clothed in each other's skins are especially amusing. Recommended for bookstores and libraries. For ages five to nine. -- From Independent Publisher
