Macy, a freelance writer and music aficionado, uses the colorful lives of two groups of composers to illustrate the advent of Romanticism in the 19th century. The lives of Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms form the basis for one set of romanticized stories, while Franz and Cosima Liszt and Richard Wagner comprise the other. Music is the continuous thread in each tale, and the author employs biography based on solid factual information augmented by "reconstructed" conversations and scenes, along with much emphasis on dramatized passions and desires. Appendixes include a chronology of musical events from 1770 to 1930, a short annotated discography, vocabulary, and bibliography. Macy's writing style is breezy and flowing, easy to read, and does not require any technical background. For most large music collections.
