Book by Rice, Ralsa C., Baumgartner, Richard A.

These two memoirs, one Southern, one Northern, are both re-edited and reprinted from editions now long out of print and are somewhat usable additions to the nearly overwhelming number of Civil War accounts. Both authors served in the Western theater and describe the same campaigns from opposite sides, including the major battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, Atlanta, and Nashville. These straightforward, no-frills accounts concern themselves with the common soldiers' service. There is very little proselytizing and no glorification of causes or commanders. Bevens's account is rather confusing as to where and when the action takes place; however, it is profusely footnoted and this helps to provide continuity in lieu of dates and place names. Rice's account has a much smoother narrative flow. Rice shows a wry sense of humor in recounting events happening around him and expresses a sincere sadness when comrades are killed. Though rather slim, these volumes are worth considering for the complete Civil War collection.
