The world around us is being constantly updated. No follower of Christ wants to drift along with all of society's changes, or blindly accede to society's norms. This is especially true today, when so much of the very fabric of healthy human society has deteriorated. To live a manner of life worthy of the gospel of Christ requires standing firm against the influence of the world. It requires forming habits based on sound, scriptural principles, habits which affect the whole of one's practical daily existence. This manual is a portrayal of the manner of life that has developed over the 20 year history of a Christian community known as The Bread of Life. The Bread of Life began in 1970 when four men moved into an upstairs apartment, sharing possessions, praying together each morning and evening, and seeking to serve the poor. Soon diverse individuals began showing up, seeking to serve the poor, or to be served, or both. When the community outgrew its first house, more households were established, each one striving to create an environment of brotherhood, simplicity, and prayer. As The Bread of Life grew in the late 1970s, more married couples joined the community. They began to focus on learning and implementing God's design for marriage and family life. Gradually those in the community came to understand that one of God's primary purposes for those in The Bread of Life was that they incorporate patterns of living, rooted in Christian truth, that form a whole way of life-a culture-in support of their desire to live fully for God and bring others to know Him. A fruit of their 20 years of hard work, prayer, trial, perseverance, and experimentation is that A Cultural Approach for Christian Community is a living reality among them today, not only written on paper, but written on their hearts. For them it has proven to be an invaluable tool that enables them to carry more responsibility in the Lord's service.
