9780963112927: Buried Treasures: A Storyteller's Journey

Travelling storyteller Joel ben Izzy recounts some of the tales closest to his heart in this voyage of laughter and tears that will take you around the world and back again.

Starting with the title story, based on a Polish folktale, ben Izzy weaves together stories with memories of his father. Among the tales are some hilarious stories of Hershel of Ostropol and a wild Hatian story about the king of the elephants.

You'll hear the following:

My Father and Hershel of Ostropol (California & The Ukraine)
Buried Treasures (Poland & Czechoslovakia)
The Road Back Home (Spain & Haiti)
One Last Hershel Tale (The Ukraine)

About the Author:

Joel ben Izzy has spent twenty years traveling the globe, gathering and telling stories. He has produced six award-winning recordings of his work, all consisting of stories woven together by music from around the world. He is also the author of the highly acclaimed new book, "The Beggar King and the Secret of Happiness" (Algonquin Books)

From School Library Journal:

Gr all levels-Joel Ben Izzy's pleasant, expressive voice brings these quietly humorous, traditional tales to life. Using voice accents and ethnic music, he brings out the cultural flavor of each story. Jewish, Haitian, and Spanish traditional tales give this collection variety and color. They are all stories about Herschel, the traditional Jewish trickster, and his Haitian and Spanish counterparts. Most of them are quite funny, and the live audience laughter enhances the humor. While the collection will appeal more to older children and adults, it could be used with elementary school students for storytime or during a lesson on traditional storytelling or multicultural stories. It will also find a niche in public libraries to be circulated for family enjoyment. A pleasant addition to audio story collections.-Cynthia Ortiz, Lee Memorial Library, Allendale, NJ
