The Pacific Coast Company was a fascinating rail-marine operation which served the West Coast from San Diego to Alaska. Its rail components were both narrow gauge and, later, standard gauge railroads, and from its inception in the 19th century, it was an important factor in the growth of California and the West. In addition to railroads in San Luis Obispo and San Diego, a third line was at Seattle. The story is well written and extensively researched, a readable and informative tour through some intriguing Western history.

Out of print since 1983, the first edition of this book has become difficult to find from used book dealers, so its return to print is welcome.Review:
Anyone with a serious interest in Western railroad history has to regard the reprinting of The Pacific Coast Company as long overdue. It's a landmark book in railroad history, perhaps as much for its comprehensiveness and clarity as for the subject matter itself. -- Richard Hendrickson, in Railroad Model Craftsman magazine, May, 1998
Best's outstanding 1964 book, Ships and Narrow Gauge Rails: The Story of the Pacific Coast Company, has now been reprinted with a revised title by Signature Press. Its format is identical to the original, but the photographs benefit from lighter printing. As always with Gerald Best's books, the roster information is detailed and complete. This book's unusual range of subject matter will appeal to both rail and steamship fans. -- James L. Martin, in Railroad History, No. 179, Autumn, 1998
With well-written and informative text, plus 10 maps and nearly 200 photographs, the late author presented a thorough look at this important operation. The Signature Press reprint is of excellent quality and presents the original Howell-North version without significant alterations. Historians and fans of railroading in California will welcome this opportunity to acquire this long out-of-print book. -- Brian Jennison, in Vintage Rails magazine, May/June, 1998
