Mandell would like us to think his book comparable in name, if not in stature, to the Physicians Desk Reference. Yet while his credentials as an author of academic textbooks on computer information systems are certainly noteworthy, this reference will be of limited value to most users. The first half presents an introduction to the fundamentals of microcomputer hardware and software, accompanied by a detailed section on buying and caring for them. A chapter of issues and challenges examines computer ethics, hacking, viruses, safety, ergonomics, etc. Although topics are liberally cross-referenced, there is no bibliography of outside sources. The section on telecommunications describes mo-dems, bulletin boards, and other online services, but in discussing the development of networks, Mandell cites neither the Internet nor NREN (National Research and Education Network). Instead, the historical treatment ends with mention only of ARPANet, NSFNet, and BITNet. The remaining half of the book is devoted to reviews of software for Macintosh and IBM-compatible PCs. Many of the programs covered have been superseded by upgraded versions, indicating how quickly this work will date. A marginal purchase at best.
