P. F. J. Turner is a Harvard-educated scholar who has spent many years researching post-Roman history and the origins of the Arthurian legend. He lives in Anchorage, Alaska, where, in addition to pursuing his studies, he is engaged in the practice of law.
Readers will be surprised to learn that The REAL King Arthur was not a king of medieval England, but a Briton of distinguished Roman heritage named Lucius Artorius Castus who lived in the former Roman Diocese of Britannia in the late Fifth and early Sixth Centuries. Britannia was then in danger of being overrun by Irish invaders from the west, Pictish invaders from the north and Anglo-Saxon invaders from the east. Arthur rose to command of the Romano-Briton military forces in southern Britannia, and he led those forces in a series of successful wars against the barbarians. Arthur's victories allowed Roman civilization to survive in Britannia long after it had disappeared from the rest of western Europe. Arthur was aided in his struggle by persons who would later achieve fame in literature, as "Sir Kay," "Sir Bedivere," "Sir Gawain" and others, as well as Arthur's own warrior sons. Arthur and his companions played a decisive role in shaping the modern nations of the British Isles.
"It is of this Arthur that the Britons fondly tell so many fables, even to the present day - a man worthy to be celebrated not by idle fictions but by authentic history." William of Malmesbury, De Gestis Regum Anglorum, A.D. 1125.
