Seven miles east of Everett, the inviting community of Snohomish (Elevation 26 to 220, Population 6,940) reclines at the confluence of the Snohomish and Pilchuck rivers. Its first resident and founder, E.C. Ferguson, staked a claim in 1857. Hopin g to capitalize on a proposed military road between Steilacoom and Bellingham, the enterprising Ferguson planned a ferry service across the Snohomish River. The road soon arrived, along with a bridge, thus rendering the ferry obsolete before it was even p laced into service. Undaunted, Ferguson settled down to saloon-keeping and politics, a well matched pair to pull any endeavor along. He succeeded in wrestling Snohomish County from what was then Island County, and in the process ended up holding most of the public appointments and titles. He wore many hats, including auditor, county commissioner, justice of the peace and probate judge. Of course, all official business was conducted from E.C.'s saloon, the "Blue Eagle".
