Ruth Ferris was one of the nation's best known collectors of steamboat objects and history. As the first curator of the River Room at the Missouri Historical Society she wrote these articles between 1940 and 1964. Brought together for the first time, they represent a history of St. Louis during the golden age of steamboats. Four of Ruth's articles were originally published in the Bulletin of the Missouri Historical Society. Three articles, "Steamboat Tales," "Crossing the Mississippi," and "Experiences of a Collector of Mississippi River Lore," have never before been published. In 1986 she donated her entire collection to the Herman T. Pott National Inland Waterways Library, a special collection of the St. Louis Mercantile Library Association.
