From boot camp at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to the beaches of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, and into Nazi Germany, War Notes documents the war experience of Sgt. Raymond McNabney. Drafted into the infantry at age thirty-two, McNabney artfully expresses the patriotic and dedicated service of a peace-loving man caught in the binds of world war.
A classical musician trained at Juilliard School of Music and Oberlin Conservatory of Music, McNabney provides a unique and refreshing look into the wartime lives of soldiers and civilians alike. Meet the Sicilians, Italians, and French who opened their doors and their hearts to American GIs, and experience the hope and faith that carried them through the war. War Notes is a heart-warming look at the generosity of humankind and the willingness to nurture love and happiness in the midst of violence, war, and destructionFrom Library Journal:
We are offered here a sampling from 300 pages of correspondence that McNabney wrote home during World War II, when he served in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany with the 45th and 103rd Infantry Divisions, mainly in the personnel section. The military heavily censored letters written home, prohibiting mention of location or actual battle descriptions; hence, we are offered a travelog describing the different cultures, foods, and dress of Western Europe. Editorial inserts describe the war the infantryman was waging while McNabney was making friends among the locals and playing the piano. This diary portrays the other war, the war behind the lines. Scores of excellent diaries were written during the war. This is not one of them. Recommended only for libraries with large World War II collections.?Richard Nowicki, Emerson Vocational H.S., Buffalo, N.Y.
