Essays, poems and recipes from Apple Annie
"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title.
The Pratts have owned and operated Apple Annie, a small orchard, since the early 1980's. At that time they were teachers, "more or less contented except for the itch to own some land where we could try growing our own food." The search led them "to this beautiful site just four miles away on a dead-end dirt road: a south-facing slope with three large gardens, a small 200-year-old house, a handsome two-story barn and 150 old standard apple trees. We hadn't considered a house, or apple trees, but..."
The book sets out the yearly cycle of their work punctuated by pauses to contemplate and appreciate - and eat. "The combination of essays, poems and recipes reflects the integration we try to achieve in our daily life," the authors say. From the Back Cover:
"Society suffers from its separation from one of life's most basic needs, its food. Joan captures the enlightening effect of growing one's own food on the soul, and shares that sense of purpose and contentment with us." --William G. Lord, Extension Specialist, Fruits, University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension
"Joan Pratt's essays inform and charm, giving us not only the life of the apple from first bud to last cider-pressing, but also the year-round cycle of labors; blights, pests and weathers; the dark seasons. Her co-apple grower's poems adorn and add piquancy, like cinnamon. And her recipes are easily as tempting as the primal apple itself. This book will drift from kitchen counter to fireside to bed-table. Best be safe - buy two and tie one to the arm of the kitchen rocker." --Jean Pedrick, author of Pride and Splendor (poetry); co-author of The Groaning Bard (cookbook).
