This book is both shocking and inspiring. It will make you laugh, it made you cry, but most of all it will give you hope. While it is normal to watch the news and hear of the many tragedies that happen, it was rewarding to know that even though one is faced with what seems to be impossible odds, through determination and hard work, one can become great. E.J., the youngest of nine children, grew up in Chicago's Ida B. Wells housing projects. During his formative years, he was engulfed in the violence and poverty that are the harsh realities of life in the inner city. E.J. earned his way through college by becoming a football walk-on turned three-year starter, all conference standout record holder and CO-captain. He understands that team players create a win/win. In this book, Silent Cry: The Key to Stopping the Violence, he relays his own life story and that of lives and deaths that put his own life into focus. The tales are both cautionary and inspiring, emotional and thought- provoking. No matter what your circumstances, race or gender, you cannot come away from these stories unmoved by their poignancy. E.J. is determined to be an instrument of change and empowerment. He hopes that in the retelling of his life story and those of his peers, he can effect change in each life he touches.

E.J. Bassette writes his true testimonial story of life as an African-American child brought up on the south side of Chicago in the Ida B. Wells projects. He tells of the violence that he faced and how he made major decisions as a youth in high school that he would overcome these detrimental obstacles. Later, as a young man after gaining a scholarship and playing football in college, he faced heart aching problems when his two best friends were murdered. This novel will bring tears to the eyes, but again a magnitude of smiles will appear when you read that he reaches the height of ultimate success as an adult. Very much uplifting, if you down in the dumps.....Every library in the Chicago inner city school system should have this novel on their shelves and then have it as required reading. It will possibly save many lives of our youth. --Anonymous Reader
