This collection of short stories by 12 year old Jessica Guzaldo, is frankly, scary. Her first book includes three short stories, a brief screenplay for a movie and an essay. Each one has a different twist, but all the twists are macabre. It’s a must read for the 10 to 15 year old set.
In "Elevator", the author describes a confession that is blurted out by a schoolgirl that is in a panic because she is trapped in a broken elevator.
The next treat that Jessica has for her young readers is about a murderous former boyfriend. In "Savannah’s Story", West, a former boyfriend of Savannah, doesn’t approve of her new dating choices and he is, shall we say, aggressive, in his enforcement of his ideas. Jessica has the readers on the edge of their seats, fearing for Savannah’s life, all the way up to the surprise ending.
"Night Terrors" is a brief screenplay of a "Friday the Thirteenth-esque", short film. It doesn’t have too deep a plot, but it has plenty of action and gore.
"Runaways" is the most lighthearted of the group. It is, as the title suggests, a story about three kids, two girls and a boy, that decide to run away to Canada.
"The Quiet Girl" is a short essay with a swift and deadly conclusion.
