The only source for researching miniature artisan's marks. This book, A Reference Guide To Miniature Makers Marks by Alice and Lee Frank, has long been anticipated. So indispensable will it become for all miniaturists' libraries, we recommend it without reservation.
The British have kept track of their artisan's signature, hallmarks, since AD 1300. We can identify many early Colonial pieces (Paul Revere, Hurd,. etc.) because we were a colony forced to comply with Britain's laws - except when we defied them. Unfortunately our cabinetmakers were not bound by law, so there can always be some question about Chippendale and Hepplewhite's work unless the paper labels remain.
Until now, appraisers had to rely on their own eye and memory for identification. What a superb reference source of miniatures! Museums, shops, those who inherit, those who collect for fun and those who collect for investment will need this book as well as libraries public and private. -- International Guild of Miniature Artisans "The Cube" Sept. 1996
