A handy little manual for aspiring bicycle racers of all ages. Discusses classic equipment, gear ratios, riding technique, time trials, intervals, motorpacing, hill climbing, weight training, mechanical issues and includes training schedules. McElmury and Levonas have both raced at the top of the bike racing world, so they have experienced a wide variety of conditions and demands. They coached riders of all levels in Southern California for six years. This small booklet is heavily illustrated with photos and drawings. It is admittedly somewhat dated, but most of the aspects discussed are classic racing issues.

About the Author:

I got my publishing start producing my first bike book, Bicycle Training for the Triathlete *and Others, a basic training book, (1983, with McElmury and Levonas). 12 years later, I sold a house to pay for the publishing of NO BRAKES! Bicycle Track Racing in the United States; a survey of velodrome racing events and locations in the U.S. (300 pages, 304 photos, 1996). By the time I produced NO BRAKES!, I had accumulated FAR more photos to illustrate it than I needed. As a teacher, teaching with text and illustrations was something I was prepared to do. Until Rainbow Quest and Handsling, NO BRAKES! was my favorite thing I had ever done. I first met Audrey McElmury in 1981. She was a great person. When she died, in 2013, writing her biography, Rainbow Quest, The Adventurous Life of Audrey McElmury, America's First World Road Cycling Champion (442 pages, 352 photos, 2016), was more a calling than a decision. Taking a break from that book, almost to my surprise, out popped Handsling: The Sequel to Breaking Away (153 pages, 47 photos, 2016), which was fun for me. Handsling and Rainbow Quest are available on Kindle. I also plan reading each into an audiobooks. There is simply nothing I like better than to produce books that I think may not exist if I don't produce them. I see them in my head for some time before they become reality. It's my best fun. And that's the story of me and my books.
