How all that equipment became part of the formidable Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company. Here is a historical illustration of how transportation made the great transformation of a small Dutch farm land into a major metropolis possible. The herculean task of turning hundredths of steam coaches into electric motor cars and later their conversion from open platform El cars to fleets of multiple unit controlled closed door units. The thinking and craftsmanship of a pasted management that viewed every new problem as an an opportunity to develop equipment that meet the challenge.

Mr. Greller has worked in the public and private sector as a planner for over 30 years. Working for the New Jersey Department of Transportation, as assistant to the Commissioner, his main duty was the development of the first, Design, Build, Operate & Maintain (DBOM) the Hudson/Bergen lightrail. Also at NJDOT, created the unique PORTWAY truck container roadway, which lead to and from the port to the various rail heads in Essex, Hudson and Bergen Counties. Director of Transportation Development for New Jersey Transit he championed the use of low-floor Diesel LRV s for the new River Line in south Jersey and the adoption of double deck cars for mainline commuter service. At Voorhees Transportation School at Rutgers, as a senior planner he developed the Newark BRT system on several city routes. This later became the nucleus of NJ Transits GO BUS BRT routes. For private Engineering companies, worked on the development of light rail expansion in Houston Texas, the re-introduction of light rail to the Red Hook section of Brooklyn and bus BRT to New York s Airports. He is the author of several books on New York City s transportation, past and present.
