Grandmother tells the story of carrying buckets of food as a child to an elderly neighbor, who rewards her with the gift of a crystal figure with a guardian angel attached.

Lynda M. Nelson is a popular speaker with civic, educational, and religious groups as she emphasizes the joy and strength of families. Lynda has worked for the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory and is a member of the National Ski Patrol. She loves Idaho, where she lives with her husband and three children. She is also the author of The Little Red Buckets.
As they wait for the bread to rise, Grandma Jenny tells her 8-year-old granddaughter, Sarah, about the time when it was her daily duty to bring a little red bucket full of food up to the poor couple on the hill, the Nies. Life on the farm was good to Jenny. Her family was caring toward each other and full of Christian charity. As the story progresses, with occasional interruptions by little Sarah, the author introduces the tension of war and the death of Jenny's brother. Balancing this sadness is the growing friendship between Jenny and Mrs. Nie and the loving protection of guardian angels. The language of the story flows nicely with an eye and an ear for precise descriptive details. There's an old-fashioned sense of decorum built into the text which is evident in both the themes of the recalled tale as well as in the comfortable relationship between Grandma and Sarah. It is also visible in the outward appearance of the book with its gold title on leather binding and cream colored pages. This book would work well as a read-aloud to children about Sarah's age. -- From Independent Publisher
