The Long, Rocky Journey A miracle is defined as "an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs." That definition clearly defines our 18 month odyssey that began with our decision to publish what would prove the world's very first network marketing directory. We anticipated nothing less than smooth sailing. After all, we reasoned, our 37 year history in the publishing business that gave birth to ten national publications would serve us well in the development and production of the printed piece nestled in your hands.

Alas, to our absolute astonishment, the antithesis proved the rule. What our staff initially envisioned as a rather routine launch of an annual publication quickly proved the most daunting challenge of our publishing careers.

Candidly, there existed several occasions when this massive undertaking appeared beyond our scope; questioning our resolve to continue. Frustration, trepidation, anxiety and anguish all proved un welcomed companions in our seemingly endless and impossible quest; yet we forged ahead and at long journey's end, prevailed and published what we feel will prove the industries official standard bearer in print. Were we successful in producing a directory that projects a positive image of the industry and one in which all involved can identify, grow and prosper, and in the process, build a strong and unified front throughout the land? You, our valued reader, will be our judge and jury.

There never was any doubt of the desperate need for an annual directory to serve an industry without a positive voice; one searching for a healthy dose of credibility. Disjointed, paranoid, maligned and under siege by every conceivable government body in the land, the network marketing industry nonetheless continues to post impressive revenue gains, albeit the marquee players account for the lion's share of its success. You remember the shopworn but axiomatic maxim, "you can't tell the player's without a scorecard." Try finding anything resembling a scorecard in this industry; a bona-fide listing of the industries best companies. This proved one of our greatest and time consuming challenges. As expected in our search, we found the business waters infested with unethical sharks preying on the unsuspecting, ill-informed and naive. Ridding the industry of these charlatans is, of course, impossible. There will always exist a large audience of impressionables seeking their fortune without effort and glib verbalists promising a lifetime of great riches, but delivering instead, heartbreak, personal tragedy, and in many documented cases, financial ruin.

We feel supremely confident our directory will make a difference in significantly reducing the number of people falling victim to the shysters permeating the industry and emerge as the only educational source necessary to make the right decisions. Perusing our editorial lineup will quickly reveal that this publication has been designed and edited not only for those about to receive their baptismal, but anybody and everybody involved in network marketing.

We referred earlier to the "miracle" required to bring our directory to the marketplace. In addition to the difficulties noted, we also ran headlong into major obstacles ranging from delinquent writers to the selection of award winners. Several writers submitted copy three months past their deadlines and our Hall of Fame and Women and Men of Distinction inductees selected by an independent panel, was met with a surprising level of heated controversy. And it was not an easy task dismissing 47 companies that applied for acceptance but failed to meet our standard guidelines for admission.

Far and away the number one problem we faced and the key reason for the continual delays in the publishing of the directory is traced to none other than the staff of our directory - more specifically, yours truly.

It's true! Initially, we encountered indifference from both network marketing companies and distributors following announcement of our intentions. Ten months into our project, however, the industry reversed itself and began to react. I miscalculated the overwhelming response from distributors, companies and aftermarket providers that followed and was frankly caught unprepared. My inability to successfully combat the onrushing tide was compounded by medical reversals that led to the series of delays in bringing our product to market.

To all of the participating companies, distributors, advertisers, subscribers, and those precious few whose unflinching support throughout the rough going provided spiritual inspiration, a heartfelt thanks for your undying patience, understanding and trust during our long, rocky journey.

About the Author:

Jerry Hoffman counts 37 years in the publishing, marketing, public relations and electronic media industries and has garnered a host of industry awards, including Publisher of the Year in a special interest category (Snow Week) founder of the nation's number one children's magazine (Children's Magic Window) and Marketing Man of the Year for his joint venture with Kroger Supermarkets. In 1960, Hoffman launched his print media career as sports editor of the Richfield, Minnesota News. Eight years later, he co-founded a weekly newspaper entitled the St. Louis Park Forum. While with the firm, Hoffman founded and served as marketing director for such titles as Recreational Vehicle Business, Product News, Tennis Trade and Sno-Mobile Times. Hoffman founded and launched other titles that included Credit Union Advantage, Snow Week, Minnesota Football, The Midwest Spectator, Satin Swan Romance Novels, Golden Passport Club, Children's Magic Window and the National Home-Based Business Directory.
