Though we were only a few steps away, the walk to Ryan's bedside seemed an eternity. We assembled there and I prayed. With Roger, Barbara, and Herb with me, I began to speak to Ryan. Between the sleeping and the seizures there was usually little time to get his attention, but we had stumbled upon a time when the seizures had abated. Ryan seemed alert, yet his weariness was quite evident. All the welled-up emotion poured from my soul, as I told my precious son of our deep love for him. I thanked him for his bravery in fighting so long and so hard. A wounded soldier on the field of battle could not have shown more valor than our son had shown.
Now came the most difficult part. The lump in my throat and the tears of my heart couldn't stop what needed to be said.
"Ryan, mommy and daddy love you very much, but it's okay," I said. " We are so proud of you, but you can go if you need to. You can go home to be with Jesus. It's your decision. Your fight has been for a long time and mommy and daddy understand if you are tired and want to rest."
