This crime story is set in the violent Cleveland post-punk club scene. Ivan Hay manages one of two thrift stores owned by the mysterious Father Ed. When Ed disappears and a corpse turns up, the manager of the other store claims that the body isn't Ed's. This way he can funnel all the profits his way and set up Hay as the patsy. Much of the action (slashed body etchings, s&m, swindles, multiple drug use, etc.) takes place at a huge club appropriately named Hell. Unlike most of the scum balls in this book, Hay has the slightest shred of human decency but not enough to make him a sympathetic character or render a compelling mystery. If your readers want a roll in the slime, direct them to books by Kathy Acker, Rick Moody, Richard Grossman, or someone else who can deliver substance along with sleaze. Not recommended.?Jim Dwyer, California State Univ. Lib., Chico
