This is the story of Chic L. Dee, a boy bird with learning disabilites, who flip-flops when he tries to fly. While he struggles to accept his limitations, he begins to discover his talents, trust his intuition and find his own way. Perhaps most importantly, he learns about making room for differences.
Any kid who has ever felt embarrassed socially, who has ever resorted to bravado in the face of shame, will understand Chic--and love this story.
The fully narrated (with original music) audio-cassette tape that accompanies this book makes it accessible to non-readers.

The very name of our story's young hero, Chic L. Dee, reveals much about him: he has learning disabilities, coincidentally shortened, as you may know, to "LD." Neurologically based, this life-long disorder is also known as the "hidden handicap" since it is frequently less obvious than most disabling conditions. In Chic's case, once aspect of his disability is quite visible. He has chosen not to fly because he is clumsy in the air.
Those with learning disabilities like Chic's face challenges often misunderstood by family, friends, teachers and the larger community. Each learns differently, with a unique way of sending and receiving information. A child with learning disabilities compensates for deficits by developing skills to deal with a world that is often confusing and frightening. Sadly, these coping devices may set the child even further apart from peers. Those with learning disabilities want more than anything to belong, to blend in with their peers. Unfortunately, accumulated academic and social failures get in the way. Self-image and emotional stability suffer. Often, expectations exceed abilities. Disappointment and isolation make friendships hard to find.
Chic faces all these challenges. He's fortunate to have a loving, involved family that understands his developmental delays. The Dees know, however, that support and stability is not enough. They realize that Chic will ultimately be responsibly for creating a meaningful life for himself. All their love can only help him to recognize his strengths and his limits and to find his own way.
Chic L. Dee's stories and songs are an educational and entertaining approach to these complex issues. These tunes and tales offer a real world model for the behaviors and sensibilities of those who have learning disabilities - and guidance and appreciation for those who love and work with them. We hope that you enjoy Chic's adventure.
