"Why the Artist Creates" is a celebration of music, art, and the creative choices we all make!
Who is Rowland Salley and why should we listen to what he has to say? Those are the same questions producer Luanne Bole-Becker asked herself at a 1993 Chris Isaak concert, as she found herself inexplicably drawn to the band's bass guitarist, Rowland Salley.
In the months that followed, they struck up a correspondence that explored why Salley chose to be a musician and painter. In this 24-minute documentary based on their letters, Bole-Becker and Salley collaborate with a talented team of film and video artists, merging original music and stunning visuals into a human interest story honoring the creative spirit within us all.
"Why the Artist Creates" is a national Silver Telly award winner, Emmy nominee, and Columbus International Film Festival honoree. It premiered on PBS station KQED-TV in San Francisco.

"I hope that if someone spends time watching this documentary, it will shine some sort of light on the next step for them to take in their creative process. Any kind of encouragement that you can get along the way towards creating something should be taken seriously.
I know for me, I could name a long list of musicians and authors and painters, from Beethoven to Sam Cooke in the music end of it, from Dostoyevski to Hemingway, from Corot to Gauguin to Picasso to Winslow Homer to a whole long list of people whose work I've admired. And that's always a strong incentive to try to go off in your own direction or maybe pick up where they left off.
As for the question of why an artist creates, there IS no definitive answer. There could be a thousand different answers! This is just one of them."
