The Complete Guide to Autism Treatments was inspired by parents of children afflicted with autism.  After speaking with several thousands of parents about various treatments and answering similar questions over and over again, Dr. Freeman realized that parents need a clear way -- a guide -- to help make appropriate treatment decisions for their child.
To this end, Dr. Freeman gives her scientific evaluation of most of the major and minor autism treatments available today, and then personalizes the analysis by telling the reader whether or not she would use the treatment on her own child. In other words, at the end of the day, how did she apply her understanding of the science to her own child?
With this book, it is Dr. Freeman's sincere hope that everyone will be able to evaluate all the current and future autism treatments available.  It is crucial to be able to ask the right questions and find the flaws in the science behind every purported treatment, or to find the evidence, where it exists, that the treatment is effective.  At a minimum, understanding the scientific method will protect thousands of children from quackery and, hopefully, provide parents and professionals with the tools to discern those treatments that are effective for children afflicted with autism.
Section One of The Complete Guide to Autism Treatments, scrutinizes the range of treatment options offered to parents of children with autism and uses the tools of the scientific method to evaluate each treatment method so that parents can make sure that the treatment they have chosen for their child stands up to the claims made by the treatment provider.
Section Two of the book is designed to provide a background in science for parents or professionals who are newcomers to the scientific method. The book can be used as a reference guide, flipping quickly to a specific treatment of interest, or it can be read as a comprehensive guide to every autism treatment advertised in the marketplace.

From the Author:

The Complete Guide to Autism Treatments was inspired by parents of children afflicted with autism. I have spoken to thousands of parents about various treatments and answered the same questions over and over again. Many times I gave tutorials to individual parents. I soon realized that parents need a clear way to understand how science works so they can make appropriate treatment decisions for their children.

In addition, professionals and paraprofessionals need to have a better understanding of the scientific method so they do not inadvertently recommend a treatment with no science behind it to the parents of the children they work with. It is crucial that professionals remember that they hold considerable status and legitimacy in the eyes of parents, and with that legitimacy comes responsibility -- a responsibility to not inadvertently send parents down the road of quackery in autism treatments.

Currently, many parents find it difficult to evaluate autism treatments for their child. They are forced to rely upon experts who may or may not know enough about the science to provide accurate information. Therefore, in a sense, parents need to become experts themselves. Fortunately, the scientific method is not difficult to understand. It simply needs to be laid out in a form that is understandable. All parents, professionals and paraprofessionals alike need to know how to make informed choices about which therapies to use to treat the child's autism. After reading this book, my sincere hope is that everyone will be able to evaluate the next, new purported treatment or cure that comes along. It is very important to be able to ask the right questions and to find the flaws in the science behind the purported treatment, or to find the evidence that, in fact, the treatment is effective. At a minimum, understanding the scientific method will protect thousands of children from quackery and, hopefully, provide parents and professionals with the tools to find treatments that are effective for autism.

From the Inside Flap:

Dr. Freeman is a prolific writer who has published numerous works related to autism and its treatment.  Her latest book, The Complete Guide to Autism Treatments, may indeed be her most important contribution to parents of children with autism, as well as to those professionals who work with this clinical population.  The book is comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and well organized.  Throughout the book, Dr. Freeman communicates a critically important message: Individuals with autism deserve access to science-based treatment; their time, their potential, and the overall resources of their families should never be wasted.  The Board of the Association for Science in Autism Treatment could not agree more.

The book is divided into two primary sections. Section I is organized around topics related to the various treatments for autism, of which there are several dozen.  Section II highlights basic concepts about science, hypothesis testing, and research methodology.   Section I begins with a review of behavior-analytic treatments for autism across home and school settings, as well as within the area of early intervention.  The various offshoots of applied behavior analysis are also summarized and evaluated. Then there is a fairly comprehensive section related to the myriad non-behavioral treatments, including those that occur in school, as well as those that are child-initiated or parent-facilitated. These subsections are followed by biomedical therapies, speech and language therapies, and, ultimately, a final section for miscellaneous therapies not better categorized in the above subsections.  Each of these subsections is divided, and in some cases divided further, in an effort to capture the more frequently-touted treatments for autism.

It is frankly unfortunate that such an extensive taxonomy is needed simply to categorize all that which is available to consumers, particularly given that the vast majority of treatments proposed for autism lack adequate scientific support.  Consumer advocates who think that exposure to many diverse treatment options is a good thing are likely not considering the agonizing decisions parents must make about how best to help their child with autism, the second guessing and guilt that may come from worrying that one is not doing enough, and the extraordinary financial burdens that come from paying for numerous treatments out of pocket.

Parents of children with autism -  particularly those with newly diagnosed children - face a dizzying array of options that can be absolutely overwhelming. Do parents of children from any other clinical population have to face these matters to the extent that we see in autism?  Quite simply, no.  Parents of children with autism deserve all of the information needed to consider possible treatments carefully and to make the most informed decision for their child. Fortunately, this book will be of tremendous help in that regard.
