9780965766340: Changing Planes

Changing Planes is Kathy Scott's latest work, preceded by Headwaters Fall as Snow and Moose in the Water, Bamboo on the Bench. In this, the third of her journals, she intertwines the making of her own bamboo fly rod with sharing how her life has been altered by involvement in the split cane community and environmental issues. Anglers and Advocates are brought together by a timeless appreciation for craftmanship; in Changing Planes, she weaves her theme as deftly as she furls a silk leader.   Kathy Scott, like a 21st century, Lady Leopold, walks a different trail, blending nature with science, craftmanship with caring.

About the Author:

A dedicated conservationist, Kathy Scott is currently volunteering in Atlantic Salmon restoration with her husband David VanBurgel. They have chosen to live close to nature at the edge of the Great North Woods, sharing their ever changing watershed with moose, beavers and pups, Effie and Midge. When not in Maine or Michigan they are most likely to be found poking about wild places. Kathy's first book, Moose in the Water, Bamboo on the Bench, has become a classic among those who treasure split bamboo fly rods. She was nominated for the prestigous Rutstrum Wilderness Author's Award for her second book Headwaters Fall as Snow. Her writing is frequently seen in Midwest Fly Fishing, The Planing Form newsletter and Powerfibers, where her themes of fly fishing, rod making and immersion in the natural world continue.

Review:

Kathy Scott's self imposed task of melding physical, mental and psychological effort into the construction of a split bamboo fly rod offers profound insight into what it means to be a human being. When she uses the rod to catch a wild native Maine brook trout we want to cheer! --Bill Townsend, President of Maine Rivers

In Changing Planes Kathy Scott weaves a wonderful account of making her bamboo rod with passionate reflections of living a life well spent immersed in the natural beauty of Northwoods Maine. While her words flow like a crystal stream, her book sparkles like the brook trout that swim in it. --Jerry Kustich, Angler, Author, Rod Maker
