This children's Christmas story about 3 mice is set in a Dickens-like village and brought to life by deep, rich colors and pictures that almost tell the story by themselves. The mice want to surprise mother with a present but they are too young to leave the house alone. They clean up the house as a surprise gift. Cinnamon cleans the bedroom. Nutmeg takes the den and Brown Sugar cleans the kitchen. While cleaning the house, they find "treasures" to give to Mother. When Christmas morning comes, they are eager to present their gifts to Mother. When Mother opens the gifts, each one reminds her of something they did together when the mice were younger. Actually they have given her more than just a gift - they have given her a memory. Character traits such as respect, responsibility, fairness, self-control, trustworthiness and honesty are exemplified in this story. It includes a lullaby, which was one of the gifts and a cookie recipe, which involves one of the! gifts.
