According to the latest 2000 statistics from Sporting Goods Manufacturers Assoc., there are nearly 14 million young athletes playing soccer under the age of 18 in the United States. That doesn't account for the millions playing basketball, baseball, football and other sports. Growing children need to eat wholesome food to stay healthy. Kids who participate in athletics need extra nutritional support. Yet, there is very little easy-to-read information about sports nutrition for kids. None that emphasizes a whole foods approach. Until now. Moon Smile Press is proud to present this much needed book for coaches, side-line parents and motivated kids. From the Author:
We were at the Kent Cornucopia tournament in July with my daughter's U-12 soccer team. Her team had played through to the finals. It was hot; the second game of the day. I had been working all spring with the girls on hydration and nutrition. Between games we had taken the girls to a shady spot and given them pasta salads, fruit, and a lot of water. The opposing team had stayed on the field and one of our parents noticed them downing hot dogs and fries a half hour before the whistle. My neck was on the line. Would the sports nutrition edge help? Our players had the right fuel to stay strong in the second half and won the tournament.
I was encouraged to continue my research. Luckily, one of my colleagues at the university where I teach nutrition and cooking is a cool guy named Scott Murdoch who has his Masters degree in Exercise Physiology, a doctorate in Nutrition and Human Performance and is a Registered Dietitian. Scott has competed in over 90 triathlons and in the Ironman World Championships 3 times. Over the next 2 years I interviewed Scott regularly, read articles, and worked with our coachs and teams. Scott and I simplified the scientific sports nutrition jargon and created easy-to-follow charts and lists. I compiled and invented quick and nutritious recipes.
This useful and affordable book was born.
I hope you enjoy it.
Eat better to play your best!
