TABLE OF CONTENTS:
How hot dogs got their name
Hot dogs were invented at a baseball game in New York in the early 1900s. It was a cool day, and the concessionaire, Harry Stevens, wasn't selling much cold food-which was all they had at games in those days. Harry went shopping for something warm he could sell. Stevens bought sausage at a neighborhood butcher shop, but the problem was: how could fans at the game hold the sausages? Stevens added buns-and the hot dog was born, but it didn't have its name yet. A well-known sports cartoonist, Tad Dorgan, was at the game. He drew a picture for the next day's newspaper showing a dachshund in a bun. The shape of the sausage reminded him of a dachshund, but for the title of the cartoon, he had trouble spelling "dachshund." So he settled for "Hot Dog"-and the name was coined.
Here's why we call accountants 'bean counters'
You often hear the expression "bean counters" applied to accountants, and the funny thing is the origin of that name came from accountants actually counting real beans. Canned beans are very popular in England, and Heinz's U.K. division was running a special promotion on its beans. To determine what their inventory was, the company sent out a group of their accountants to literally count the number of cans of beans in various stores. When the accountants got back to the main office, other employees in the company started referring to them as "bean counters"-and the name stuck, and spread.
