After the Blue is Russel Like's charming, American answer to Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy--straightforwardly funny science fiction with a healthy dose of social satire. The premise is that goofy aliens have destroyed almost everyone on Earth... accidentally. A century later, they're contrite and trying to rebuild human society based on the information they gather from books, movies, brochures, and ... shudder ... old television shows. Problem is, the handful of survivors living in Jamesburg, New Jersey, may not be ready for the Gruumsbaggian idea of how things were.Review:
A hundred years after the Gruumbaggians destroy life on earth as we know it (inadvertently), they decide they should come back and try to fix the mess they created by accident. Armed with only some sit-com episodes, tabloid magazines, and other odd bits of information, they decide to re-create earth life. Before long, seven-foot-tall aliens with four arms, blue hair and long orange noses demonstrate how to run a McDonald's to the descendants of earth, recreate human normalcy like air pollution and crime, force women to bake cookies all day long against their will, forbid happily married couples to speak to each other in order to reintroduce "divorce", and make everyone unwind at the end of their hard working day by doing the hokey-pokey whether they like it or not. How to stop these incredibly annoying aliens??? One renegade group comes up with a daring plan: write a fake text book about human society that will make the aliens go away. Author Russel Like has created a wry book about what life might be like if viewed through the eyes of aliens. After the Blue is a wicked satire of the oddities and weirdness our society is prone to. Like's interesting, colorful characters inhabit this really goofy post-Apocalyptic world and make the day after Doomsday pretty funny. Deftly written and highly entertaining, this should be a favorite of science-fiction and tabloid lovers alike. If you liked A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy , After the Blue should be right up your galaxy. -- From Independent Publisher
