Growing Up, By George! is the story of George C. Marshall's early years (1880-1901)in Uniontown, Pennsylvania and as a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute. It is a biography written for middle readers, grades 3-7 and for anyone else with an interest in the childhood and teen years of General Marshall. The book has 11 chapters, 40 b&w photographs and 19 original pen & ink illustrations by Robert Tharp, maps of the Uniontown's area and a section explaining the Marshall Plan, a time line of his life, and a summary of his career with a biography of the author's resources. It is 6x9 inches and has 102 pages.

Mary Sutton Skutt is a native of Virginia,a graduate of Radford College and the University of New Hampshire and taught in Virginia schools for 18 years. After retiring from the Lexington City Schools, she became a docent at the George C. Marshall Museum and Research Library. Having grown up during the time that Marshall was making the history we study today, she decided to write a book that young people could read concerning this great American. Mrs. Skutt lives in Lexington with her husband, has 4 grown children and 12 grandchildren. Housework is not her hobby.
