A book of memoirs by the world's oldest full-time immunologist, Souvenirs starts in Transylvanian Hungary and goes around the world as it evokes a century of enthusiasts, famous and unknown, who have found inspiration and sustenance in science and the arts. The book's rich itinerary includes such places as Paris, Rome, Venice, Budapest, London, Sao Paulo, Bessarabia, Syria, Kyoto, Fiji, Borneo, Beijing, and New York. Souvenirs brims with stories about Nobel laureates, diplomats, and artists, including Bela Bartok, who frequented Dr. Ovary's childhood home, Salvador Dali, Birgit Nilsson, and Dr. Ovary's godmother, the Baroness Karola Bornemissza, the first woman in the world to fly in a plane. Dr. Ovary looks lovingly to the past yet continues to find inspiration in the world of chance and possibility. Breathing through each decade of the century, Souvenirs is one man's farewell to this century and invitation to the next.

Zoltan Ovary, who was born in Transylvania in 1907, is a professor and scientist at the New York University (NYU) Medical School, where he also organized the long-running concert and recital series. He has written more than 300 articles for professional publications, including Science and Notes (a journal for musicians). In 1984, NYU started the annual Zoltan Ovary Symposium to celebrate his work and his inspirational role.Review:
"Souvenirs includes a personal history of many important turning points in the European and American medical world, stretching back to the early years of this century. It contains numerous amusing, curious anecdotes about famous scientists and Nobel laureates actually met by a person with great scientific and cultural gifts. Dr. Ovary's amazingly sharp memory and artistic sensibility light up these lively, generous memoirs." -- Tomio Tada, author of Well of Ignorance and Meanings
"In his inimitable way with a story, Dr. Ovary recalls his extraordinary life, one framed by the great political, cultural and scientific transformations of the twentieth century... His pantheon of human achievement is amazingly vast, full of unsung or forgotten masters. In writing his memoirs, Dr. Ovary has given us a unique gift, something both grand and precious." -- Lloyd J. Old, MD, Director, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research
"This is a strong, important story. It is told well and is accessible and engaging. Dr. Ovary has had a remarkable life and the history which is throughout his book is important to know and to remember." -- Carolyn Fleg, Editor, John Daniel & Co.
"What makes Souvenirs a personal memoir, what gives it an individual voice, is Dr. Ovary's evocation through direct experience of a Hungary and Europe that have lost everything from geographical identity to a sense of manners. His description of many subjects, from the 'guest family' to the developments in medical training and research, is unique. He leads us by the hand through the century and across the globe through lived experiences that go beyond the usual narration." -- Frank Dabell, Art Historian
