Swayd holds a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and has taught comparative religion and mysticism at California State University, Long Beach, and San Diego State University. He is a Research Associate at the Gustav F. von Grunebaum Center for Near Eastern Studies at UCLA.
