Hello. My name is Walter Semkiw, MD, and I wrote and produced Astrology For Regular People. From the outset, I would like to point out that this book is much more than a text on astrology. This is a fully color-illustrated book that integrates astrology with world religions. The nuts and bolts of how one's spiritual life unfolds into the physical world is portrayed in an integrated and entertaining way. The way I got into astrology was a bit of a fluke, as you can read in the "Author Bio" section. One reason I wrote this book is because I find value in monitoring the astrologic transits. The transits seem to be associated with specific emotions, frames of mind and possible events. Most people are unaware of the transits because astrology is often presented in a very complicated way. The purpose of Astrology For Regular People and our computer-generated Astrocast Report is to allow people to directly monitor the effects of the transits, in a way that is fun and easy. Only when the transits are validated by a large number of people will astrology gain greater credibility. The transits help me understand why I feel a certain way. In Astrology for Regular People, I describe the transits as determining the emotional weather patterns of our lives. Monitoring the transits helps us understand our moods. The transits also allow us to take advantage of these emotional weather patterns in a constructive way. Some periods of time are best for working or playing, other times are better for rest and reflection. The transits remind me of the following biblical verse from Ecclesiastes: "To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the sun... A time to weep and a time to laugh: a time to mourn and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together; A time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing..." The transits seem to have a part in determining these different times of our lives. Other valuable aspects of astrology are the planets and signs, symbolic archetypes which help us understand personalities. We all have the twelve signs and ten planets within us. As an example, we all have Mars within us. Mars represents will power, determination and assertiveness. We also have Moon within, which represents our emotions and maternal love. In total, there are ten archetypes that comprise human nature, and they are represented by the ten astrologic planets. The planets also form the basis of the archetypes of the astrologic signs. Many personality theories focus on only one archetype. For example, Freud's focus on sex and aggression represents a personality theory centered only on the Mars archetype. Freud's theory is incomplete because we have nine other archetypes within. Though I don't believe that the horoscope is the primary determinant of personality, I find the planetary archetypes extremely helpful in understanding people. In our book, the planetary archetypes are made easy to grasp by presenting each as a cartoon character. Each character has a story or fable. Our planetary characters can even help children understand themselves. Little boys can understand that they play aggressively because of their Mars nature, but they can also be taught that using force to hurt others is wrong. In this way, we can combat our society's fascination with violence, which represents a glorification of the negative or immature aspects of the Mars archetype. I must relate that I do not think of myself as an astrologer. I am simply a person trying to understand life, and astrology seems to have a part in the way the world works. Astrology, though, is not everything. Indeed, one of the greatest problems we face is that people become attached to a particular belief system, then reject the truth of other systems. An analogy I love to use is the Hindu story of the blind men and the elephant. Four blind men encounter an elephant and each examines a different part of the animal. One blind man runs his hands along the tusk and proclaims this is the nature of the elephant. Another touches an ear, the third a leg and the fourth the tail. Each blind man is convinced that he knows the true nature of the elephant, even though each blind man has a totally different conception of the elephant. Trying to understand reality through only one religious or spiritual system is similar to the blind men claiming to know the true nature of the elephant through one, limited experience with the elephant. You can imagine that trying to understand the world through only one system is like a one-legged elephant trying to stand upright. The elephant may be able to stand for a period of time, but only through much effort and a great deal of faith. Eventually, the elephant will fall.
With our project, we are trying to get the poor pachyderm off the ground. In Astrology For Regular People, world religions are integrated. The essential truths of Buddhist, Christian, Hindu and other spiritual systems are conveyed in a fun and entertaining way, without religious ornamentation or dogma. Astrology, reincarnation and Christian mysticism are interwoven into a philosophic whole. We present a four-legged, whole and happy elephant. I believe the integration of world religions is the most important factor for humankind's further development. Without this integration, the separation of peoples will continue, and conflicts and wars will persist. In presenting an integrated understanding of spiritual life, Astrology For Regular People is a book written for all cultures and all people. Stay tuned for Pluto Project's next book which will further address past lives, destiny and free will. As described and illustrated in Astrology For Regular People, an individual's physical appearance and personality traits persist from lifetime to lifetime. In our next book, visual evidence of reincarnation will be presented. From the Back Cover:
People have an intuitive belief in astrology. Unfortunately, meaningful astrologic information is unavailable to most people.
The purpose of our book is to make available astrologic information which is useful on a day by day, week by week and year by year basis. We will provide you with user-friendly tools so you can observe the planets working in your life. We will teach you to understand your personal life calendar, your "LifeMap".
Our intent is not to convince you that astrology is valid. Our intent is to give you the tools so you can observe and experience for yourselves. Only when you see will you believe, and only then will you appreciate the ancient saying, "As Above, So Below".
This book was written by regular people for regular people. Regular people are grounded, pragmatic and have common sense. They also eat lots of fruits and vegetables.
Astrology can be complicated and difficult to understand. We strive to make it simple and fun. Cartoon characters are used to embody the meaning of the planets and signs. We use pictures in addition to words to help convey astrological concepts. We welcome you to this journey. Know when you embark on this path with an open mind you will never see the world in the same way again.
