This book discusses all 331 species of butterfly seen in Arizona. It is illustrated 557 full, half and quarter page photographs taken under natural conditions by the authors and several other professional insect photographers. Opposite each photograph is essential information that includes key field marks, time of year the adult flies, caterpillar food plant, range and habitat in Arizona and pertinent biological and behavioral notes. There is an extensive food plant list edited by botanists Richard Felger and Michael Wilson.

Bob Stewart is a professional naturalist who has previously worked at the Point Reyes Bird Obsevatory and the Marin County Parks and Open Spaces Department where his natural history courses became legendary. He started photographing butterflies in 1992 in order to learn to identify them. In 1997 he produced the book "Common Butterflies of California". After spending five years in Patagonia, Arizona Bob now lives in Arcata, California with his wife, artist Kathy Bunnell.
The Brodkins' interest in butterflies had its inception in California in 1990. In 1997 they moved to Carr Canyon in the Huachuca Mountains of southeastern Arizona. They have led butterfly field trips and conducted butterflies seminars for many organizations. In 1999 they were instrumental in forming the SouthEast Arizona Butterfly Association.
