A college-educated debutante from St. Louis goes out west for a summer and ends up marrying a Wyoming cowboy, bear hunter and son of a horseman for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It sounds like a made-in-Hollywood romance, but it's a true story, told compellingly by Anne Charter with help from oral history that husband Boyd left behind before he died in 1978. Their struggles with the land, animals, weather, wildfire, coal companies, politicians and one another make for a uniquely American chronicle.

"'Cowboys Don't Walk' is a love story, all about love of life, love of land and Anne's love of the cowhand she met at a Wyoming dude ranch more than a half-century ago." -- Roger Clawson, The Billings OUTPOST
"Mrs. Charter's book is a moving portrait, told through the eyes of a Montana rancher's wife, of a life and time now all but lost to us. But it's also the story of a present-day struggle to preserve and protect what does remain of that life. Her books shows us that individuals willing to work hard, and believe, can prevail." -- Robert Redford
"This well-written story with extensive photographs...is a must for everyone's regional collection." -- Susan Thomas, Thomas Books
