Principles of Positive Training

Many methods of dog training advocate the use of harsh physical corrections. While dogs trained with these techniques may appear obedient, they are actually complying out of a fear of punishment. It would be like someone putting a gun to your head and demanding that you do the Hokey-Pokey. Sure you'd do it, but is that what it's all about?

Aversive methods seemingly give the human immediate control, but have serious long-term repercussions. Punishment-based training causes stress and frustration, which often surfaces later as aggression or other behavioral problems. It teaches your companion to dislike training and to fear making a wrong move. Worst of all, it erodes the trust between you.

Wolfdogs are often more sensitive than doggie-dogs. While all dogs should be trained with positive methods, it is especially crucial with wolfdogs! The use of harsh training methods could result in severe psychological damage to your wolfdog, not to mention severe injury to you, either immediately or down the road. Now for the good news: There are wonderful, effective, positive ways to train your wolfdog!

It's nice to believe that your wolfdog wants to please you, and for all I know, maybe he does. But the truth is, canines do what works for them. Well, that's understandable. So do humans! Let's use that knowledge to our advantage.
