Synopsis

Jack Strickland became a B-24 Bomber pilot with the 445th B.G. stationed at Tibenham, England. On March 24, 1945 he was piloting the deputy lead plane for the 8th A.F. 2nd Air Division raid on Wesel, Germany (Operation Varsity - the crossing of the Rhine). Col. Carl Fleming, Deputy Base Commander, was flying in the co-pilot seat. At home in the United States, Jack's wife, Kitty, cared for their young son and awaited the birth of the couple's second child...

This is a story of a young couple whose lives were abruptly and permanently altered by WWII. Unlike most WWII books, it is told from a woman's perspective.

Having been with Jack all through his pilot training in the Air Force, Kitty gives a vivid description of what life was really like during the war years. The book includes letters from Jack -- an unusually-observant young man -- to Kitty and his family and friends. It also contains numerous pictures, newspaper articles and well-researched military documents including flight orders.

Jack and Kitty's story will bring back memories for the men and women who lived through those days. It gives an authentic look and insight into the lives of young people at that moment in history. A 'must' for history buffs, WWII veterans, active or retired military, and anyone who enjoys a love story and a good read.

About the Author

Kitty Strickland Shore (1924 - 2002) wrote "Red Roses and Silver Wings," a memoir about her life with her high school sweetheart and first husband, Jack Strickland. The book tells of their experiences that included Jack's training as a military pilot, his time overseas, and his final mission in the 1940's - at that time Kitty was 21 years old and pregnant, with a baby at home.

Kitty never let adversity or age be a factor in making decisions about what she or others could achieve. For example, when she was in her 40's she took painting lessons and learned she could do well painting with oils. She held several shows of her paintings and created greeting cards that sported the still life images she created. In her early 70's she learned to use a computer, and during that time in her life she researched and wrote "Red Roses and Silver Wings."

Kitty Strickland Shore - "artist, author and mom" - brings the personal side of World War II to life in her book about one young family's separation and journey through those years at war.
