Both beautiful and scholarly, this CD-ROM takes advantage of computer technology to provide quick and easy identification of wildflowers. This content rich CD will satisfy the novice and the experienced botantist with over 600 carefully selected full color photographs of local wildflowers supplemented with knowledgeable text by noted Bay Area botanists Glenn Keator and John Game.

The idea for this CD evolved from a delight in flower photography combined with frustration at trying to identify flowers from books. For the novice, such as myself, technical plant keys with their obscure terminology are too difficult. The more usual, hit-or-miss, approach of browsing through many pages of pictures in "user-friendly" field guides until one finds (if lucky) an approximate match, may result in an incorrect I.D. In this CD we have combined these two approaches: the user starts with a very simple icon-driven key that reduces the number of possible matches to a handful of species displayed on a single thumbnail screen. The final identification is made visually and can be checked against the full screen image and accompanying text.
My collaborators, botanists Glenn Keator and John Game, Director programmer Kevin McFarland and I have produced the kind of product I wished I'd had when I first became interested in wildflowers.
