The true story of an orphaned bison calf and the family who raised him. His boisterous antics in the yard--and in the house--are colorfully illustrated from photographs. Whether chasing the family dogs or tearing down the dog-door to follow his pals, Nickel not only acted like a pup, he was mistaken for one by neighbors and tourists alike.
Nickel's affection for people and his Houdini-like ability to sneak out of gates lead him to an Indian sweatlodge (where he is nicknamed 'Big Medicine'), on a trot alongside unsuspecting hikers, and to a fishing pond where he sneaks off with a fly rod and tackle box.
The book has 37 squirrels hidden throughout, and a website with a map for finding Nickel's herd (although Nickel is no longer there), bison bits (interesting facts about bison) and a coloring sheet of Nickel. It is a family book written at a 3rd to 4th grade reading level.
