Synopsis
Available in an extremely limited edition, Tracht is based on photographer Juergen Teller's "Miss World" project, in which he took portraits of the contestants from each country during the 1999 pageant. These close-ups are printed with spectacular, glossy precision that convey the feeling of prints themselves. Bound in a linen cover and slipcased, each copy has 76 color plates and is signed and numbered by the artist.

About the Author
Photographer Juergen Teller was born in Erlangen, Germany in1964. He studied at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt fur Photographie in Munich, Germany. He has lived and worked in London since 1986. Teller's work in books, magazines and exhibitions is marked by his refusal to separate the commercial fashion pictures and his most autobiographical un-commissioned work. His work has been published in influential international publications such as W Magazine, I-D and Purple and has been the subject of solo exhibitions including The Photographers Gallery in London, the Kunsthalle Wein and the Fondation Cartier Pour l'art Contemporain in Paris. In 2003 Teller was awarded the Citibank Prize and last year he was asked to represent the Ukraine as one of five artists in the 52nd Venice Biennale. He has also participated in group shows at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Tate Modern in London. Teller has produced numerous monographs, his most recent being 'Nurnberg'.

From Parr & Badger: "Tracht (a German word with no English equivalent, but 'national costume' comes close) began when Teller was asked to photograph Miss Venezuela in Caracas. Later, in November 1999, he photographed all the Miss World contestants when they were in London, portraying them in a way that is both expected and unexpected. These young ladies, who full intend their faces and their figures to make their fortunes, are trained to project a particular look - a mask of beauty - for the camera.
