Christine Karem Borders of Louisville, Kentucky, has been drawing and painting as long as she can remember. She is the mother of seven children, grandmother of twenty-two and great grandmother of seven. She is a self-taught artist whose work has been exhibited in art galleries throughout Kentucky.
This story, although fictional, is modeled from Christine's mother who immigrated to the United States from Lebanon. Christine remembers her mom as "tough, gutsy, loving and giving - strong physically and metally. Her family was her life."
Christine Borders is the mother of Thomas and Louis Borders, co-founders of Borders Books and Music. From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-4-A sweet, old-fashioned story. Rafe is crazy about his Gram, who speaks broken English, walks with a cane, and always wears a navy blue sweater. He loves her even though she is "different from any other grandmother in the world." When the boy's mother goes to the hospital to have a baby, Gram comes to stay with him. They have many adventures, including going fishing and helping to catch a bank robber, an act that they keep as their secret. The ink drawings help readers to visualize the action and the characters. The story is well written and reminiscent of Beverly Cleary's "Ramona" books and Carolyn Haywood's "Betsy" and "Eddie" series (all Morrow). Young readers will meet a friendly woman and her grandson, each of whom has a unique personality. The book also stresses the importance of being open to new experiences and being secure in one's differences. A good choice for transitional readers.
