Pass the TExES is an excellent test prep book for the TExES PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities) teacher certification test.
The book has already been used in several TExES PPR seminars and tutoring sessions taught by the author Mark Mentze. Several improvements have been made since the seminar version of the book debuted in October, 2002, and this new retail version, is now available to the public. This book follows his popular ExCET book for the PD, Pass the ExCET on Your First Try.
Pass the TExES contains condensed and outlined study content, illustrations, worksheets, study helps and unique exercises such as the acronym, descriptor, and practice test exercises, and it includes an interactive study module on CD! The CD contains a very unique feature for helping teachers/student memorize the Competency definitions, as well as the PDF version study materials from the SBEC/NES for each grade level.
The Pass the TExES program is quite different from most test prep programs available for the certification tests. The program makes the study information provided by the SBEC/NES more easy to understand and internalize, and teaches unique study methods and test-taking strategies by encouraging and strengthening the use of one's analysis and synthesis skills.

This first edition of Pass the TExES not only addresses the issue of memorization and its importance in taking the TExES PPR (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities) exams, but also includes a helpful guide to identifying the all-important Competencies. In my opinion, a person is 50% ready for the exam after gaining the knowledge base of the Competencies. When the ability to identify the Competency before answering the question is mastered, the other 50% of your exam readiness is accomplished.
You may be planning to take the TExES exam shortly and are filled with apprehension like I was before my first certification test after moving to Texas in 1998. It is a scary thought to realize that if you canÕt pass the tests you could lose your job.
When I started to prepare for the Professional Development ExCET exam I was confused as to what I was supposed to study. I found out about a few resources, which I purchased and studied. However, I did not pass the first Professional Development exam. For my second exam I used my graduate school study strategies. I gathered and abbreviated important information, outlined it, and created acronyms to help me memorize and recall information. I passed the Professional Development exam the second time and raised my score by 13 pointsÑa dramatic improvement. I also passed the TExES exam easily, and on my first try.
I expanded my materials so that other teachers could benefit from my study system. Illustrations, worksheets, an interactive computer module on CD, etc., have been added. As you know, the TExES PPR exam is now replacing the ExCET PD exam. My goal for Pass the TExES is to provide well-organized effective material for the PPR exam that is easy to study and internalize. I really believe if you follow the instructions in the Steps for Success, (pp. x-xi) you will pass the exam.
Please note that at the back of this manual in the Appendices you will find worksheets, the acronym memorization aid, a Competency chart, the seminar student packet, and important contact and resource information.
The information contained in this manual is useful to ALL TEACHERS who want to continue improving their professional skills, not just for passing the TExES exam. At first I was not thrilled about taking the certification tests, but I feel I can be a better teacher now, after 13 years of teaching, just because I internalized this information. Learn it and apply it!
