BOOK REVIEW AUG. 25, 1999
A Passion For Politics by Anita Perez Ferguson Luz Publications, 1999
The release of A Passion for Politics: Encouraging Women in Leadership, (independent, Luz Publications, 1999) is a manageable road map for many women and a practical gift for a politically dazed public. Author, Anita Perez Ferguson, presents us with an intriguing and humorous array of current political and social commentaries from her years of broadcasting with WAMC, Northeast Public Radio. Her writing style educates, entertains, and most importantly, encourages political involvement for the average citizen.
A veteran pol, Perez Ferguson, recently completed her four year term as president of the multi partisan National Womens Political Caucus in Washington DC. Previous to that leadership post she held the position of White House Liaison for the US Department of Transportation and National Training Director at the Democratic National Committee. But her views in A Passion for Politics are anything but beltway jargon or partisan parroting.
I found myself laughing out loud at the bus stop as I read your book I began thinking seriously about how I could get involved in my community! remarked early reviewers.
Backed up by distinguished voices such as Eleanor Clift of Newsweek who penned the forward, and published articles from conservative mags such as In Sight, where Perez Ferguson is pitted against Ward Connerly on the topic of affirmative action and identity politics, she demonstrates an independent voice in her article on women and poverty in the progressive, quarterly magazine published by the National Association of Community Action Agencies. Indeed, the cover endorsements of Perez Fergusons work by Secretary of State Madeline Al bright and award winning author, Sandra Cisneros, speaks to the authors credibility and diversity.
The public release of A Passion for Politics during Hispanic Heritage Month is a statement of pride and hope by the southern California author. Her own heritage, as a second generation American from Mexican roots, links her work to a larger news trend of Latino political involvement; but the issues and instruction in A Passion For Politics make it a valuable read for all Americans.
