Clinician's Guide to the Soul is a pocket-size book containing forty-five poems by Veneta Masson and ten evocative prints by Rachel Dickerson. The title sounds risky. Who combines clinician and soul and the promise of guidance! But the poems are hard won and come out of the poet's personal and professional experience in health care and life. Clinician's Guide to the Soul was written for health workers of all kinds, family caregivers, patients and readers of poetry. If offers insight, diversion, sustenance and healing for those who wrestle with the challenges of clinical practice, illness and mortality.

Veneta Masson is a nurse, poet and essayist living in Washington, D.C. In practice for thirty-five years, twenty of them in primary health care, Masson was a founder, director and family nurse practitioner in a small mom-and-pop clinic providing office and home care to the mostly-poor residents of an inner-city neighborhood. Two of her previous books, Rehab at the Florida Avenue Grill (poems) and Ninth Street Notebook--Voice of a Nurse in the City (essays), came out of that experience. Though no longer in practice, she continues to explore healing art and contribute to her profession through writing and editing.
