Synopsis

Rene DuBoise has interrupted her Vodou training and returned home to New York City to bury her mother, a victim in a bizarre police shooting. She quickly discovers that her mother's death was orchestrated by a deranged, drug dealing, Paleros sorcerer. However, discovering who is responsible proves far easier than revealing his ultimate plan. A plot that is laid over the city like a spider's web entangling enemies and allies alike, including Isabelle Desanto, whose brother was killed for his interference. And Paul Whythe, cultural anthropologist at NYU, and consultant for the NYPD's Cult Related Task Force. As the city races headlong towards a violent and bloody civil riot, Rene and her comrades begin to understand the true scope of the spells that have been set in motion. A spell so vast it threatens the lives and souls of everyone in the city. Now, they must race the clock to thwart this sinister scheme before the city explodes.

About the Author

Kevin Stickman Tinsley has worked in comics and publishing for the past 15 years. An expert in prepress and desk-top publishing, Tinsley s professional mantra is "Any job worth doing well, is worth doing yourself." This sentiment, which he encourages in others, is evident in his first book, Digital Prepress for Comic Books. "I believe American comics are on the cusp of a significant and lasting change for the better" states Stickman. " Of course I ve believed that for the last two decades; so one of these years I m bound to be right!"

Reviews

Tinsley and Smith 3's new work concerns a Vodoun priestess in training who finds herself battling an evil sorcerer in downtown Manhattan. Sci-fi, horror and Caribbean-African spirituality are woven into real-life acts of police brutality. Rene DuBoise returns to New York from Haiti after her mother has been killed, much like Amadou Diallo, by two NYPD cops. The city is already on edge with the ongoing trial of several police officers charged with the murder of a drug dealer whose brother, Gangleos, is part of a Cuban Santeria-related cult that worships the dead. Gangleos is also a suspect in Rene's mother's murder. Filled with zombies, spells and supernatural explanations for real events in New York, the book will make readers think twice the next time the city sprays to kill West Nile virus. Tinsley offers a polemical perspective on Gotham life under former Mayor Giuliani, and Smith 3's cartoonish, manga-influenced drawings bring out the grit of lower Manhattan. While the duotone color is impressive throughout, the panels that integrate the drawings with photographic backgrounds really pop. Ambitious, political, pointedly critical of the NYPD and very New York-centric, this is an engaging, fast-paced action-drama that places legitimate religious movements like Vodoun and Santeria in a realistic urban context despite the supernatural plot. Tinsley's script has an urgent subtext commenting on the illegal police brutality endured by many black and Latino New Yorkers.
