It is a true story about the author's experience as a young soldier fighting the Chinese Civil War in late 1940s. Chapter One describes social conditions of the author's childhood. Chapter Two covers the author's nightmarish memories at the civil war. Chapter Three depicts his new life; education, romance and marriage, in Taiwan after losing the war. The story ends with Chapter Four, peace returns, of the author's revisiting his hometown in China from the United Sates after decades of losing contacts with his family.

Richard T. Li, was born in a remote rural village, Quidong County, at the southeast corner of Hunan Province in China. His childhood and early adult years were spent living within the destruction of the Japanese invasion of China during World War II and the subsequent Chinese Civil War between the Nationalist government and the Communists' Liberation Army. He came to the United States from Taiwan in 1967 and became an American citizen in 1977. He earned four college degrees (BA, MA, MLS, Ed.D.). Li's career in education in the United States included positions as public school teacher, junior college library assistant director, and university assistant professor. He retired from his education career in 1997.
