About the Author:

Kitson Flynn is a marketing writer for KPMG, a leading international business consulting firm. A lifelong equestrian, Kitson has published many articles in horse magazines, and volunteers as a website editor for The Bonobo Conservation Initiative. She lives in Washington, DC, with her husband, two dogs, two cats, and a carrot-thieving horse. This is her first book.

Denise Ortakales received her degree in illustration from the Art Institute of Boston, where she now teaches. Her paper sculpture illustrations have won several awards and appeared in many adult and children's magazines. Denise's first children's book, PLANETS, by Jennifer Dussling, was published in 2000 by Grosset & Dunlap. She lives in Laconia, NH, with her husband and two sons.

From School Library Journal:

Preschool--The plot is simple in this rhyming puzzle, but the anticipation builds to a delightful end. A small farm boy says, "I had a carrot in my pocket. Oh no! Now it's gone./I had a carrot in my pocket. Who ate it? C'mon!" Through the lilting rhythmic verse, readers follow his activities, from the barn to the garden to the apple trees and back to the barn. The cut-paper illustrations are an intricate part of this humorous story. The culprit-the donkey-is cleverly hidden in each spread. From the first run through to each repeated reading, toddlers and preschoolers will delight in finding him-even when only his tail or feet are seen. An additional treat is following Mrs. Mouse and her children. On the first page, she appears alone. In each successive scene, an additional mouse is added until at last there are 10, all snuggled with her in a nest of straw. Ortakales has gone beyond simple cut-and-paste illustrations. She has formed detailed creations with depth and texture. The three-dimensional-looking straw bales have prickly stems, and the hens are plump and rounded. The many details, such as tiny tools in a toolbox or picket fence on the birdhouse, give readers much to see. The expressive countenances of the farm critters suggest that maybe they, too, are in on the donkey's secret. An excellent choice for group or one-on-one sharing.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH
