What have you learned lately? Hopefully this is not an intimidating question. Chances are you have learned something new everyday of your life. It could have been a major piece of learning - perhaps a revolutionary theory or skill, or perhaps a more minor tidbit like learning a new route to work that avoids the major road construction in your neighbourhood.
The point is that learning is much more than a stack of books. It is definitely more than what takes place in institutionalized locations such as schools and colleges. In fact, you were involved in learning long before you even entered school and you continue to learn as you grow up and move out of school. (Why, at the very least you learn to cope with getting older)
Learning is a process that involves gathering information, gaining skills, considering alternatives, making choices and acting on those choices. These choices in turn leads you to gathering more information, gaining new skills, considering diverse alternatives, making different choices - an so on and so on. . . .
Learning is an integral part of your life, which brings us to SMART FROM THE START. This book focuses on what you can do to support learning at home. Through practical suggestions and tips you will be able to identify how your child learns and how you can be involved in supporting your child's learning.

The focus of this book is on learning. Learning is a continual process that requires the learner to be actively involved in making connections between old and new learning. It also demands that the learner take time to collect her thoughts and consolidate what she has learned.
We would like you to be an active participant as you explore this book.. We invite you to investigate ideas about learning and to think about learning. To that end, we have included pages called LEARNING LOGS which are designed to assist you in your personal reflections.. To help you in consolidating your learning, we have also summarized each part of the book in an acrostic poem and flow chart.
SMART FROM THE START is a guide for you to maximize your child's learning. You can open the book at any point, and select information about learning that is relevant to you and your child.
Part One looks at you as a learner, you as a teacher and the nature of learning. You will be encouraged to think of yourself as a learner, to consider what helped you to learn, how you learned and what learning feels like and look like.
In Part Two you'll be able to recognize learning at home and identify ways to support learning. Strategies will be provided for you to create a productive learning environment at home as you monitor, support and encourage learning.
Part Three, the Learning Labs section of the book, is designed to provide you with a selection of specific suggestions and activities that will enrich your interactions with your child. The intent is that you can pick and choose which activities will best suit the needs of your child. By involving your child in such rich learning opportunities you will be able to support your child's learning successes.
Part Four links learning at home to learning at school. It examines how your child learns language, mathematics, science and other subject both at home and at school. Lists of our favourite books are also included.
In Part Five you will learn how your expertise is valued at school. It will show you the similarities between learning at home and learning at school. A series of frequently asked questions are presented to address common concerns you may be facing.
In the final section of the book, Part Six, we'll take a look into our crystal ball to look at how the SMART START will support SUCCESS in the future. You will explore what your child will need to learn, and how to learn, in the years to come.
Throughout SMART FROM THE START we hope you take a chance and try some activities on for size. We know that learning cannot be prescribed and that you will need to adapt our suggestions to suit you. Learning doesn't come in a kit, but it does come in the minds of all of us.
