9780970058898: Phlebotomy for Nurses and Nursing Personnel

Phlebotomy for Nurses and Nursing Personnel presents basic phlebotomy techniques with one goal: to teach techniques and principles that protect the nurse from accidental needlesticks, protect the patient from injury, and result in the collection and transportation of high-quality specimens to the laboratory.

From the Author:

This text has been painstakenly designed to illustrate the principles and techniques of blood collection procedures on several levels. Interjected in the text are actual case studies from my files as an expert witness in phlebotomy liability cases. Special "In the Lab" sections describe how deviations from standard practices impact the testing phase of specimen processing. Boxes of "Precautionary Notes" and "Helpful Hints" pull out important information from the text for special emphasis. To make skimming chapters easier, we've incorporated marginal notes for quick browsing through the core concepts presented on each page. A great deal of though has gone into this text, not only to be the most accurate and understandable presentation on the topic, but to put it in a nursing perspective that credits them for having a basic understanding of blood collection concepts.

From the Back Cover:

Finally! A phlebotomy book that teaches this important procedure from a nursing perspective. This lon-awaited text presents basic phlebotomy techniques to nurses and their assistants clearly, concisely and with authority. That's it. No lengthy dissertations on esoteric phlebotomy procedures; no pedantic lectures on human anatomy or blood composition; and no tutorials on clinical laboratory science.

Phlebotomy for Nurses and Nursing Personnel recognizes that nurses and their assistants don't have time to wade through large tomes written for entry-level phlebotomists in search of the core concepts. Nor do they need basic information. Pressed between the ever-increasing pressure to maintain their current skills while juggling work, home and parental responsibilities, any book that teaches today's nursing professional to learn and perform a new procedure had better get to the point. That's what this book does.
